friday's wishing list

How adorable is this little print from Valentina Design?

If we have a little girl, I'm wondering if I could design her room around this print? Or this one? Or what about this one with the dapper little owls? I just can't decide on one ... I guess I should buy them all! :)

What's on your wishing list right now?

on the wishing list: bags

Some folks have a thing for shoes, and while these are the coolest shoes EVER, my penchant is for bags. I understand the necessity of having at least 3 different black bags, and a tote for every day of the week. And, since a certain someone's birthday is right around the corner {ahem}, I've gathered a little listing of some bags I think are just swell. Just in case you're wondering. No pressure. :)

Adoring this swell bag from Holly Aiken. I mean, dang!!!! All her handmade lovelies are so very cool, and she's in NC to boot. I love to support locally, but it's a bonus when the bags are functional AND stylish.

This fab little sweetie is from Becky OH!, and I've been swooning over her bags for a couple of years now. This Cameo above is my current new fave.

Finally, I picked up this idea from my "neighbor-I-know-only-through-the-web" but really, I must have it for Spring. I found it in a swanky metallic gold at Regency Resale in Fort Mill, and Amy mentioned hers came from Birds of a Feather.

Support the Earth by ... shopping!!!

Rarely do we have the opportunity to engage with people who are truly making a difference. I had the pleasure of meeting Renee Garner of Wolfie and the Sneak at a show last year, and was impressed not only with her work (check it out here), but with her giving and thoughtful attitude. She's the type of gal who inspires with her art AND with her actions.

On February 1st, head on over to the sale Renee put together to support The Sierra Club. It's a collection of fantastic handcrafted items from some talented folks. And 100% (that's right ... all of it) goes to The Sierra Club. Plays With Mud is honored to be a part of it!! Thanks Renee!

Aunt Art: fun stuff for kids

I got these sweet chalkboard mats in the mail this week from Gretchen at Aunt Art. Aren't they darling? One is for Owen, and the other is for another little sweetie in our life for Christmas (can't spoil the surprise!). The packing itself was a nice surprise, as Gretchen had made a little pouch out of oilcloth to ship the mats in. So sweet!

The Jeans Project

Tonight I'm meeting Miss Emily from the Mafia to run a trial installation for the Jeans Project we've been working on. This supports The Family Center, which provides resources and support for child abuse. Working on this project really touched my heart ...

Here are some images from the jeans I completed.

my first Etsy purchase

I've long been a window-shopper on Etsy but I've never actually purchased ... until tonight! I've been in the market for a new handbag and I discovered some adorable bags by Pieces of Kandee. Heidi was so super sweet and made this custom bag just for me - yippee!!! I am so excited to get it. I'll post some pics once it's here ...

New lovely pendants

I've been so busy lately, got disheartening news last week (on three occasions), and have been generally in need of something inspiring to brighten my spirits. Such a thing arrived on Saturday in my new Yuzen Pendants from A Planet 4 Creation!! Lilie handcrafts these little treasures out of balsa wood and Japanese Yuzen Chiyogami papers (I ordered the green with flowers and brown with flowers). They arrived in sweet little purple packaging, nestled in tissue, waiting to be adored.
Thank you Lilie, for the beautiful inspiration I needed. I've felt better just wearing them this week!!

Art on Main

This Saturday was Fort Mill's Art on Main Show. I was so honored to be a participant, and was among so many talented artists. It really made me think about the quality of my own work, what I put into it, and what I hope others will see. Check out these lovelies that took top prizes:

This is a piece by artist by Monique Luck entitled I See My Daughters. It caught my eye at the private artist reception on Friday night. Simply stunning.

This little treasure is from Raymond Overman's Mad Hatter Teapot Series. It's WOOD. Unbelievable. His pieces are so carefully and artistically crafted, I assumed they were stoneware before looking closely.

I met so many wonderful people at the show, and met some of my online acquaintances too. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and supported us. And a special thanks to the Town of Fort Mill for such a well-organized show. I'm already looking forward to next year's event!

Yummy veggie pizza

Here's a recipe for a *delish* veggie pizza, compliments of my mother-in-law. This makes a perfect appetizer, or a meal on nights when the hubby is out of town! :-)
Ingredients:
  • 2 8oz packages refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 2 8oz packages cream cheese softened
  • 16 oz carton dairy sour cream
  • 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese
  • various colorful veggies: carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, peppers, zucchini, and anything else you like
Preparation:
  • Heat oven to 375
  • Separate dough into 4 long rectangles: place crosswise on ungreased 10 x 15 x 1. ( I used a Mini pan designed for the toaster over to make a smaller version)
  • Press over botton and up sides to form crust, firmly pressing perforations to seal.
  • Bake 11 to 14 minutes.
  • While crust is baking, combine cream cheese and sour cream in a small bowl and chop your veggies {I can't stand broccoli, so I minced the suckers until they were barely visible}
  • Once crust is cooled, spread the cream cheese/sour cream mixture over the top. Sprinkle veggies on top and then the cheese. Enjoy!!

Some {recent experience-based} tips:

Wait until the crescent roll crust has really cooled before spreading on the cheese mixture. Remember, this is a CRESCENT ROLL, with delicious flakes that attach themselves onto your knife and make a mess of everything. Patience.

A fantastic addition would be to sprinkle some flavor or dip mix into the cream cheese mixture, like these from The Dippy Chick. I'm gonna add "Gettin Piggy Widdit" to my next round {cause really, what goes better with veggie pizza than bacon??}.

You can purchase the pre-cut, pre-washed, bag of assorted vegetables that works out great for this recipe. Also, only make what you need {i.e., cut this recipe in half, at least if you're not gonna eat it all within a couple of days}. Cream cheese + crescent roll + 3 days in fridge = mushy mess. :-)

Charlotte Craft Mafia member ... Tracey Belts

The Charlotte Craft Mafia's very own Tracey Belts was featured in today's edition of The Charlotte Observer. In addition to making fun belts, Tracey is also making these swanky bags ... I just adore this one:
Way to go Tracey - great article!!!

Success!

I made my first, from scratch {almost}, blueberry pie last night. Although it needs more blueberries in the filling, I'd say it came out a-ok. I was quite proud of myself, as I stood over the stove, successfully thickening my sauce. Holy canoli - I don't think I've ever {intentionally} thickened ANYTHING while cooking. To see something change state, that was actually supposed to do so, was nothing short of amazing!!! I was tempted to grab my camera to film it happening because I knew the hubby wouldn't believe me, but I knew if I stopped stirring for even a second, all hell would break loose and the sauce would burn onto the bottom of the saucepan, and I would continue my streak of disaster in the kitchen. So I refrained, but next time ... it's all gonna be documented!! :-)

Friday Feature: Textile Fetish

I have been needing/wanting a craft apron since the day of my first craft show and my cash was tucked in every pocket imaginable. Plus I just think they look so swanky and so, well, crafty when you're doing a show. I've been making patterns and sketching out what I wanted it to look like when lo and behold, I found Textile Fetish.
Jennifer makes the most darling little aprons and goodies. I recently received this one from her ~ and I can't wait until my next show to put it to good use! The gusseted pockets are perfect for storing cash, coins, pens and a pad of paper or receipts. And don't think I haven't donned this apron around my studio already ... you know ... have to break it in :-)

While you're at Textile Fetish, check out all the other great gear she has to offer ~ knitting cases, crochet hook rolls, etc. I really love the patchwork style of her aprons and bags ~ this new flower bag is especially cute! She brings an unexpected collage of colors and fabrics together that lends a very fresh and friendly character to her products. And the clothing ... come on ... those little outfits are precious {I'm now eyeing these for my little fella}.

Friday Feature: Claudine Hellmuth

{Today marks the first "Friday Feature," where I'll highlight an artist/designer that inspires me.}

I've always been interested in collage; in fact, I gave a couple of presentations in my public speaking classes in college on collage and I used to work for a local artist doing decoupage on home accessories. It's been on the backburner lately, with so many other priorities stepping forward. I've been exploring some ways to bring together my love of clay and paper and fabric, and I was researching collage for some inspiration. Then I found Claudine's site ...

Claudine Hellmuth is a collage artist who creates amazing mixed media art. She complements photographs with pen, paint, paper and fabric to create a personalized and whimsical sketch. Her art is the perfect gift for a special occasion, or simply no occasion at all, especially for that person who has EVERYTHING.

Peeking around her site, you'll find that Claudine is actually a nationally-known collage artist, with two books and multiple television appearances under her belt. AND, did you know that Claudine teaches workshops? I just discovered that she'll be in Concord, NC in April 2008 for the inspired: artist workshop. That's right up the road from me (yippee), so I'm *hoping* I can attend.

Check out the Poppet that I ordered from her recently ... isn't it just charming??

"blooming" flower rings

Check out this delightful flower ring by Twist Style. {Aqua Bloom Flower Ring with Swarovski Crystal: $28}

I just discovered this site today through Indie Finds, and now these rings are on my ever-growing wish list. Maryellen {the artist} has created some swanky necklaces that integrate antique pendants with vintage beads. The products are all lovely and the design of the site is a delight to wander through.
